Letter to the Editor Sent to :
WALL STREET JOURNAL
Dear Editor: I have no problem with election or appointment of someone who has committed acts of misconduct if they are most qualified for the job. What I do have a problem with is when David Petraeus claims that his misconduct was a mistake and not intentional acts of wrongdoing. The difference is not simply one of semantics or legal interpretation but rather one that has large impact on the very moral fiber of our culture. A mistake is a miscalculation, a slip, a blunder or an oversight. Misconduct clearly involves a conscious choice of doing something you know is wrong for your own benefit that may cause suffering or harm to others. I too stood on the plain at West Point on July 1st, 1970 when our class was sworn in as new cadets, and received my diploma and commission there on June 8th, 1974. As cadets we learned the difference between a mistake and misconduct. I also have consciously chosen to do things that I knew were wrong and that hurt others. Many of us have done so. Taking responsibility for one's actions and not making excuses for them, however, is what I am looking for in my country's leaders.
