Dear Editor: I am writing this out of concern for the disabled, the elderly, and children, basically the people who are vulnerable, the people who don’t have a voice in society. Often these people are busy struggling, in poverty, on pensions that do not pay enough money to make ends meet. A person may work for many years, and still only qualify for a very low pension if they become ill and unable to work. Developing a disability could happen to any one of us, especially as we get older. I am a retired PSW. I worked in the Health Care Field for eighteen years with the elderly until I felt forced to retire in 2008. I spent many years, working part-time in Nursing Homes, and working for Home Care with elderly and disabled people Now that I am disabled, I have to fight to obtain care. Plus the fact, I am not receiving an income that is adequate for me to live on. I am grateful to the people that have helped me so far, but I am going to need ongoing assistance. The resources that are available to people, are difficult for average people to access, and a person has to fall into a certain criteria to qualify. If your income exceeds around or just over $1000.00 a month, because CPP and private pensions come to that much, you do not qualify for O.D.S.P. which entitles you to drug benefits and other discretionary benefits. Anyway, any comments, anybody? Sincerely, Kathryn Bell Tillsonburg, Ont.
