Unprecedented PreElectoral Rhetoric
Dear Editor: Unprecedented Pre Electoral Political Rhetoric Unprecedented pre electoral political rhetoric is but natural consequence of elections. It is natural for political parties and their leaders to boast about their ‘unprecedented achievements’, make ‘tall promises’ and decry opponents with choicest expletives. Ironic, but true it is, media sensationalizes pre electoral political rhetoric obfuscating key issues thereby making rational choices by voters an impossibility. People are no longer gullible – duped or deceived. They can exercise their more intelligently than hitherto in the past. Awake and arise people of India; try and keep your head over your shoulders. Don’t lose yet another opportunity to choose your own destinies and that of the nation’s destiny to traverse. The ‘Ball” is in your half of the court. How will you play it will ultimately decide the fate or state of the nation until next elections. Ipso facto, “India has been caught at cross roads or in a tunnel” on the path of peace, prosperity, development and brotherhood from the time of independence at the stroke of midnight hour in August 1947 – over 66 years of my life time. There appears no sight of light at the end of the tunnel. “Unprecedented Growth’, Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister, has been oft repeating – from Ramparts of Red Fort to Chattisgarh. On paper, such claims based on statistical data may sound highly appealing for Congress Party followers and raise their spirits. The Congress Party has to face not only anti incumbency, double anti incumbency of the 9 years rule, but also over 50 years anti incumbency era. Unprecedented growth by comparison with the past “Elephantine growth (below 4% annual growth” based on data available on records is real when viewed from the ‘Top”. None can contest such claims. Be that as it may, for critics of the Congress Party led UPA-II regime such claims of unprecedented growth may appear outrageous and preposterous, particularly over the past 4 years. However, the ground realities mercilessly expose major shortcomings. Some of the contra highlights provide a balanced perspective. Unprecedented “inflation”, particularly food prices, is the bitter truth. Unprecedented “Corruption” has engulfed the nation – Lootocracy on grand display. Unprecedented “political paralysis” has resulted in loss of face of the nation externally and loss of credibility in domestic context. Unprecedented “economic recession” what with manufacturing sector on decline. Unprecedented “profligacy” of public expenditure well beyond nations economic sustainable capacity. Unprecedented “widening rich and poor divide” making a mockery of socio-economic justice enshrined in the Preamble of the Constitution. Unprecedented “Dynasty Propagation” making democracy a mockery. Unprecedented “policy of divide and rule” contra nation building process. Unprecedented “crimes against women and girl-child” contra claims of a ‘Civilized Society’ par excellence. Unprecedented “Demographic Transitions – population growth, migrations and identity crisis”. Unprecedented “criminalization of politics” with crorepatis alone can contest elections. Others too can be added to some of the highlights given above including external affairs flip-flops. Rainfall had been bounteous over the past 9 years of UPA-II rule. So, growth in agriculture is more due to “Divine Intervention” and by the hard work of farmers and agriculture labour. Had it not been growth in agriculture, economic growth rate during the past four years would have been dismal. Viewed in the context and content of electoral politics, all parties have been making tall promises in their election manifestos and failing to fulfill them in the full realization that it is an uphill challenge. Experts have also been on record that the nation has the potential to emerge as a “Super or Regional Power” since 1970s; but our politico-bureaucratic-judicial-S &T-security forces have failed dismally to convert potential and promises into realities. Ipso facto, our nation figures in the bottom quarter of UN HRD, Amnesty International Corruption and others. One cannot but help recounting the famous remarks of Bismarck: “All of these powers are travelling on the stream of time which they can neither create nor direct, but upon which they can steer more or less with skill and experience. How they emerge from that voyage depends to a large degree upon the wisdom of governments in various Capitals.” And, the fate of the “Wise Councils in the Capitals” depends on whom the people elect in a democracy. In democracy, people get what they want and deserve. And, “Great Leadership; not good leadership per se” is the need of hour. Great leaders are not born; but made by people in democracy. Key personality traits that characterize great leadership should include: Clear Vision; Experience, immutable ethics, morals and values, team building capacity; maturity; transparency; and a streak of ruthlessness (will to pursue vision). Such a leader must possess both transactional and transformational skills. If people fail to seize this opportunity to foist such a “Great Leadership”, then they cannot lay the blame on their chosen political masters to serve as slaves until next elections. As a nation, we will remain stranded perpetually at the cross-roads unable to traverse on the right course of peace, progress, prosperity and brotherhood.
