NEW YORK TIMES
Dear Editor: This is in regards to the opinion piece "Time to Think Bigger About the Refugee Crisis" by BONO (NYT, APRIL 12, 2016). Bono has a big heart. His intentions are undoubtedly noble. But there are a couple of things that he needs to understand. This refugee crisis is not a natural disaster. It is a man-made catastrophe and it has been long in the making. The people who have created this catastrophe are the people who have been running our world for several decades. They constitute the same elite establishment that now urges us common citizens to make sacrifices to save the victims of this catastrophe. Many of us would be happy to do it. But, unfortunately, this sacrifice will be an exercise in futility because it do not address the root causes that have created this catastrophe--the system of governing the world that has been established and run by the very same elites that now ask for our sacrifices. There is little anyone can do for the victims in this tragedy until we change the way the world is run. Today it is refugees from Syria, tomorrow it will be refugees from Saudi Arabia, or some other part of the world. The world is in crisis. It is a major crisis that can only be compared to WWII, perhaps even worse. At least in WWII we knew who the enemy was and we understood very well that we must defeat the enemy in order to start healing the wounds. I am no so sure we understand this now. Ironically, by making our sacrifices we unwittingly support the conditions that have created this crisis; we prop up the system that produced this disaster in the first place.
