Letter to the Editor Sent to :
TIMES ,THE (LONDON)
Dear Editor:It was moving to read the well written obituary of James Campbell. As one of his students ( 1975-78) at Worcester, I remember him as a great and a gentle man. I believe that I was one of those present when he accidentally set fire to a box of matches during a tutorial. At this current time of turbulence and spin, it is no bad thing to remember the qualities of logic, tolerance, reflection and analysis which made him the outstanding professor he was. Perhaps our present politicians would do well to consider the example of this wise and civilised man.
