Prof.M.G.K. Menon - Great scientist
Dear Editor: Prof. M.G.K. Menon - a great scientist and a great human being. Prof. M.G.K. Menon, was my mentor and Guru in my earlier carrier. Little did I know when he picked me as his PA, when he was Director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, the vast opportunities that would unfold before me. His being a stickler for precision and perfection in everything, (including the title of a person, a comma, colon, semi-colon, full stop etc) and a lot of demands needing fast action could, rather than baffle me, only benefit me immensely. His vast knowledge, experience and wide spectrum of activities in all of which I could get involved, to whatever little extent, proved to be the right kind of nutrient-rich fertilizer and water much needed for my nurturing and grooming, and for my career growth ahead. Sir, I can never forget all this and have reserved a special corner of my heart to preserve my abundant respect and regards for you. Without this opportunity for working with him for a decade or so, I would have just been a 'flower born to blush unseen'. For, even today many of my friends and relatives know me only as PA/Private Secretary to Prof. Menon. It was due to his constant encouragement, appreciation for my work and the confidence that he placed in me that I could succeed in my career - ending up as a Director in the Department of Electronics, holding other major positions as OSD in the Science Advisory Council to Prime Minister and as Chief Personnel Officer, CDAC. It was again through working with him I was able to publish a book on HRD and publish over eighty articles on S&T, Management, HR and general topics. His encouragement for my writing. I have seen the article (S&T organizations - Need for Genuine Autonomy - which appeared in Management in Government) and also the book on Human Resource Management which you had sent earlier. I am glad that you continue to put your thoughts down on paper, which is far more than what I manage to do. A great human being He along with Mrs. Menon visited my house in Delhi, specifically to see my new born son, who received as gifts from them a silver toy and some dresses. If he was in turn, he would always make it a point to attend the wedding of the staff, irrespective of the position they occupied. In other cases, he always ensured that at least a personal message was sent. He and Mrs, Menon again visited my house, when I had shifted to another place. He spent on both these occasions considerable time talking to me, my wife, my old mother (who was also staying with me), cutting some jokes too! His last e mail to me sent some three years ago. It read 'I had a nasty fall some time ago and thereafter, I got severe back pain. And, now the doctors have diagnosed me as a patient of Parkinson's disease'. He used to shares with me personal details about him many a time. Spotting talent. His ability to spot talent was amazing. Many people who had closely worked with him, including me, were specifically chosen/selected by him - all of whom had benefitted a lot through his nurturing such talents. Today, 22 November, I came to learn about his end through Malayalam TV channels. While I was at once shocked, in one way, I was relieved that God was kind not to prolong his last few days with pain and misery. I pray to God that he dwells in his heavenly abode, with all peace.
