Letter to the Editor Sent to :
DAILY TELEGRAPH , THE (LONDON)
Dear Editor: It astonishes me that criminals in jail, far from regretting their misdeeds, should have the arrogance and impudence to treat jailers with hostility and to damage property. It seems to me that we need a jail system that discourages recidivism, reduces arrogance, teaches respect and costs less than the present system. Surely the answer is to outsource prisons; anyone given a custodial sentence for anything more serious than failure to buy a TV licence should serve his or her sentence in prison in Thailand. This would produce useful revenue for the Thais and enable the UK to use prison land for other purposes. Most importantly, the experience is likely to discourage repeat offences. John Alexander
