Dear Editor: Climate change is a very important factor for the world as, it affects everyone on a large scale. It is basically a major change in the weather and climatic pattern of an area. These changes may last for a long duration of period such as a few millenniums. They result in extreme conditions too hot or too cold. Due to climate change proper equilibrium is not maintained. All the human activities are responsible for climate change and they have to bear the consequences of their doing in the future. The main reason responsible for climate change is Global warming. Global warming is the rise in the average temperature of the atmosphere of the globe. According to scientific explanations, this increase in temperature occurs due to accumulation of various gases like ozone, nitrous oxide, carbon-di-oxide, methane and water vapour. Carbon-di-oxide gas has a property like glass which allows heat to penetrate but not to escape. This creates a Greenhouse Effect. The ozone layer that prevents us from the harmful UV radiation from the sun eventually starts to deplete. These harmful UV rays causes skin cancer, cataract and other skin ailments. We all need to unite and work together to beat climate change and protect humanity from extinction. The carbon emissions from the fossil fuels should be reduced. We should use substitutes instead of fossil fuels as they are non-renewable resources because they take millions of years to form. It is vital for us to adopt cleaner forms of energy that are non-polluting and renewable like wind energy, solar energy and so on... Due to technological advancements, we can use wind turbines and solar panels to produce electricity. Proper resource and mineral planning should be done in a way that would benefit the present as well as the future generations. The 3 R’s –Recycle, Reuse and Reduce help in making a waste-free environment. We can contribute our own bit from daily activities. Walking or riding a bicycle instead of driving an automobile is a small step which would help in tackling climate change. Deforestation should be banned as the carbon sinks are disappearing and we should focus on reforestation. The incandescent light bulbs should be replaced by LED or CFL light bulbs that are more energy efficient. It’s the time to react or else it would be too late. The human race is facing the ‘most dangerous’ time in its history where the planet is in crisis and is facing technological as well as environmental challenges. We face many environmental challenges but we don’t understand that these are reminders that alert us. Perhaps in a few centuries, we will have to establish human colonies on stars, but right now we have only one planet and we need to protect it.
