SAINT JOHN TELEGRAPH JOURNAL
Dear Editor: I am sympathetic to cyclists. My husband has a vision impairment that prevents him from driving motorized vehicles, so he goes everywhere by bicycle - has for years. I don't see how this law can be enforced, though. First, I would wager that a large percentage of the population (myself included) would not be able to judge what was a metre between the passenger's side of their car and anyone on the side of the road. Second, if cars are not permitted to pass unless they HAVE that much room, there will be very many streets and roads backed up during busy times of day, because there is not enough room on most streets for that much room between a car and cyclist, when the car also has to leave room for oncoming traffic. I sympathize with those who've had loved ones killed or injured while cycling the streets, but painting a line that says "bicycle lane" does not create the room necessary for the type of space this law would call for. It seems to me that the time and money it would take to try to institute such a traffic law would be better spent creating bicycle trails that keep the cyclists OUT of traffic. My two cents' worth.
