The ABC is ou of Touch
Dear Editor: The ABC is NOT meeting it's charter to the Australian people and particularly the people of Perth, where I live. This mammoth organisation has not used new Technologies available to them to provide a better and more informative service. If you were designing the ABC from scratch you would never design the disjointed and repetitive outfit we have today. The ABC is simply expanding a platform that was designed in the 1950s and 1960s That's why we have the disjointed and disorganised outcome we have today. They have far too many disjointed websites of little use, far too many Television channels, far too many radio stations and an amazing number of redundant offices. It's even worse in Perth .... we simply get "repeats" of programs offered on the other channels 3 hours earlier. Take ABC 2 for an example ... 7 days a week we get the repeat of a fairly poor Breakfast program already shown 3 hours earlier on channel 24. The entire channel is redundant, except for the local news at 7pm ... Look at the women's golf shown on the weekend on Channel 2 in Perth ... the ABC elects to broadcast this great event by showing it 3 hours delayed. That is simply hopeless and demonstrates a contempt for West Australians. Even Channel 10 doesn't do that anymore. The entire outfit needs to be re-designed from the beginning ... ask Australians what we want and let us influence how you spend the $1 billion dollars you spend every year, and let us choose to watch ABC LIVE from Sydney or Melbourne (or anywhere). Let us decide what channels (and radio stations and websites etc0 we want and where they should be broadcast from. Sadly, the very same problem is exhibited by SBS and it's even worse because the ABC and SBS compete against each other (and even bid for programs against each other !). What we want is certainly not what the ABC or SBS are providing now. This could be so easily improved and have an enormous impact in both suburban and regional areas. Take a look at BBC iPlayer and compare it to ABC iView .. the comparison is stark, leaving the ABC decades behind even in streaming television. The ABC and SBS need a major revamp and fast .. it's not hard, but they will never get there if they don't realise they have a problem. Geoff Larsen Perth
