WALL STREET JOURNAL
Dear Editor: Great job by Peggy Noonan in calling Dean Acheson a “first-rate second-rate” planner - an earnest bureaucrat plodder rather than a grand strategic thinker. His “presence at the creation” was a blur. Acheson failed to see the emerging geo-political role in the future of Asia and America’s role in that part of the world. All this has led to the emergence of a Russia-China-North Korea nuclear bloc that has thrown today’s world into constant turmoil. Acheson’s tragic miscues loom behind his support of: 1) decision to cut off military aid to Chiang Kai-shek handing China over to Mao Tse-tung in 1949; 2) creation of NATO to shield Europe from Stalin but no similar such alliance for Asia, where a proxy-Cold War was actually being fought; 3) policy of containment (no plan for a quick and decisive victory), which eventually led to stalemate in Korea and debacle in Vietnam both costing 100,000 American lives, and U.S. “forays” into Iraq, Afghanistan now in in their 13th year. Here’s how the Daily Telegraph sizes up Acheson in somewhat trenchant fashion: “Acheson … was always more immaculate in dress than in judgment.”
