Times of India, The
Demand for Muslim Representation
Dear Editor:Broadly, Indian Muslims can be divided into two segments. One, who hail from families of Nawabs and such elite and other who engage in economic activities of craftsmen, farmers and small traders. As of now Muslim middle class is too small. In Muslims too, if we leave elite (Pathans/ Syeds), there are wide differences in lower segment (Quereshis –butchers, Ansaris-weavers. and so on). Though mass Namaz on Fridays was meant to develop fellow feeling, it has not been successful. Against repeated questioning by Mullahs on TVs that why Muslims were not given adequate representation, may I ask of which Muslims we are talking of. Sunnis? Shias?Ahamdias? Pathans? Syeds? Ansaris? Querisis? Sufies? Wahabis? Salafis? I can go on. Do we not need to choose a representative who truly brings (AT LEAST TRY) all Indians of different faiths, beliefs, economic, and social strata to bond together to further THE INTEREST of Geographical India with all the inhabitants living there in? No worthy representative say Mamata Banerjee, Sitaram Yechury, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Atal Behari Bajpai , Charu Majumdar, had begged to represent Brahmins. We need one who thinks of India. A Gujarati Bania did it till 1948. A Gujarati Backward gentleman from a very ordinary stratum is doing it today. I share an experience. In 2015 I was passing through Dubai for first time. I was offered a night stay at city by carrier. I found all from SAARC countries had to register themselves before entering city. Exemption/ Green channel was allowed to Arabs, Europeans and Japanese. I felt bad. I realized that Muslims from SAARC got no specific preference either. In effect all of us from SAARC have to live together even if we fight, and share our sorrow and joy together. Like it or not we are treated second class elsewhere. In Geneva and also in Dubai during return, I developed close friendship with people from Pakistan at latter’s initiative. In fact I felt bad because of my initial hesitation. Landing at Kolkata, I saw a huge poster where a known Brahmin girl wearing Hijab was praying in Muslim style. My spirit of Bonhomie instantly vaporized. Later I sat to analyze who was responsible for arousing anger and hatred against my fellow Indians of Islamic faith. I tabulated it: 1. It was Hindu politicians who under the garb of secularism are trying to further their own interest fooling the Muslims, who are not MINORITIES with over 20% share but CRITICAL MINORITIES who can swing election results provided others (say Hindus) remain divided and Muslims remain uneducated and fearful, listen only to Mullahs. 2. Imams and Mullahs too have chosen themselves to be the vote merchants who would hand over their merchandise of followers against privileges conferred on them. Note that West Bengal dole out two thousand rupees per month to Sunni Imams. After High Court had stopped on a case filed by Brahmin Pandits same dole is routed through WAQF Board. Ponder that a Political Leader is the husband. He has four wives. Holy Quran mandates that equally good treatment is to be given to all four. But the Husband has special love for one of the wives. Even the sons of the wives know it. No discipline can be imposed on them since those who are paid to impart it know that they would be penalized if the employer is agonized. Recalcitrant children of the preferred wife go on bulling other children and go scot free. How long can it continue? Would not individual sanity succumb to mass insanity and resultant ventilation of pent up anger and sense of deprivation? I urge Muslims to please consider. I also urge consider Hindus to consider following issues. 1. All Muslims in India majorly had Hindu ancestors. 2. They have not necessarily embraced Islam after a threadbare comparison of merits and demerits of different religious scriptures 3. It is likely, that as we see today, the beneficiaries of the state patronage tend to gravitate to the beliefs of those in power; our craftsmen and those who depended on state patronage (e.g. Muslim rulers) embraced the religious beliefs of the rulers. The same was compounded because Hindu elites continued to humiliate (and STILL HUMILIATE) those hailing from junior castes. We all CRAVE for dignified existence. Our caste discrimination disallowed it and caused exodus from Hinduism.
