Letter to the Editor Sent to :
Times of India, The
Recent Shootings of Indians in US
Dear Editor: We are attendees at the recent International Conference on the Changing Landscape of Science and Technology Libraries (March 2 - 4) 2017, hosted by Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - Gandhinagar. As non-Indians, we were treated with warmth, generosity, and hospitality by the conference organizers and delegates. They took much effort to ensure our comfort and enjoyment of this tremendously successful conference. We have deep gratitude for the open welcome we received, inviting us to India to share our experience and ideas with other librarians and data experts from around the world. Now, we feel compelled to express our profound grief, horror, and shock at the shootings and murders of Indian residents in the U.S. within the last few weeks. With all our hearts, we share the sorrow of the families of these men, and our concerns for the safety of of the Indians in our communities. (Although the names have been shared in news media, we refrain from sharing the names of the individual men out of respect for their privacy and concern for the safety of the survivors and their families.) All of our nations and our professions have benefited greatly from sharing expertise, collaborations, and the contributions that Indians in all walks of life bring to our communities, and we will be the losers if fear of racist violence in America curtails to these important international relationships. Please know that we are committed to speaking out against racism and violence and will continue to do so in our universities, our professions, and within our communities.
