Letter to the Editor Sent to :
Dear Editor: Cricket Mania India has off late been a place where Cricket is the most sought after game and tends to bestow money and popularity to cricketers in an unprecedented way. Such has been the popularity of Cricket in India at the cost of even national spots, Hockey that India has been pioneer of T-20 cricket and its Indian Premier League (IPL) which has not been beyond controversies. Cricketers like cine stars are Demi-Gods in a developing country like India. It is more as a opium to the over population of India so that people could be diverted of the attention of nitty-gritty of development and misdeeds of politicians and now-a-days many cricketers are politicians because they cannot acquire the status given to Bharat Ratna awardee and nominated Rajysabha member Sachin Tendulkar. Hence, they adopt tactics to remain in the minds of Indian People and reign supreme, whether thru their much publicized affairs with movie actresses or through some movie based on making them cricketers or entering into Indian Politics en-cashing their popularity earned thru cricket. Former cricketer Chetan Chauhan has been MP and now is a Minister in the state government after winning elections as an MLA. Similarly, former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, whose claim to fame in Indian politics after being MP three times is changing his loyalties like many veterans and then going on to win elections as an MLA from Punjab and desiring to be a Minister despite his professional participation in a comedy show for long. Out of popularity and gimmicks, cricketers remain highly paid and than earners even as compared to top industrialists. Cricket in India has not been beyond controversies such as match fixing, affairs and immoral activities and nepotism as in case of son of former cricketer Dileep Sardesai being patronized by NDTV and even recently schools promoting former cricketer Virendra Sehwag. Their post-retirement activities only indicate over popularity in an over populated country where many people struggle for two square meals but none has come forward in social service till now and they are paid and popularized at the cost of Olympic medals and other games and sports. The NGO of cricketer Yuvraj Singh also remains eyewash and his advertisement for his so called struggle against Cancer. There is no dearth of talent but Cricket overshadows talent in other sports and there are vested interest which has debarred great talents even in Cricket in the past to enter IPL T-20 field and even ODI and tests such as Padmakar Shivalkar and many others. There should be some policy and guidelines for cricket and media interference for cricketers and its/their forced popularity. In the past there were great cricketers but none were not mad to encash cricket in other fields such as Indian Politics.
