Times of India, The
Hike is Engineering fees for NRI
Dear Editor, This letter is to help bring to light some grievances that I, an aspiring DASA candidate for the year 2017-2018 and many others happen to have. I really hope you can find some time from your busy schedule to help hear and support our cause. The CIWG scheme, implemented last year, was the main reason that a majority of us students from the Gulf aimed for perfect or near perfect scores in the SATs, so that we could be eligible for this scheme, as it is a godsend for us. The CIWG scheme, granted eligible students admissions into elite and premier Engineering colleges of India with fees being on par with that of Indian students. Whereas, a student getting in through normal DASA quota will have to pay an amount 6 times that what the resident student pays. However, a few days back, I noticed that in the brochure for DASA 2017, they have hiked the prices of CIWG to be on par with that of normal DASA students, from 1400$ per year to an ungodly amount of 8000$ per year! For students such an I, who are staying in the Gulf, this comes as a shock! Not all of us are financially well off, and the cost of living is really high over here. Also, there is a lack of coaching facilities for entrances and other higher education related activities. This change in fees comes as a serious blow to my plans for higher education. As per AICTE notification New Delhi of 21st January, 2004 issued vide Gazette notification No: F-37- 3/legal/2004 dated: 21st January, 2004, the fee is supposed to be on par with Indian students. We haven't even prepared for additional entrance and banked all our hopes on this golden opportunity. Sir, please do consider that this is a matter of our very futures. We have worked really hard to make the required cutoffs so that we too would have the opportunity to study at premier institutes and contribute to our mighty nation. These fees are too high and unaffordable to a majority of us. Please hear our cries for help. Furthermore, I attach below an on going petition, that has garnered around 1000 signatures so far from various concerned candidates and their respective parents from the Gulf, who too are protesting against this unfair change. I hope you can find the time to read each and everyone of their concerns. https://www.change.org/p/dasa-to-reduce-ciwg-fees-for-dasa-2017-2018-to-that-of-resident-students Please sir, help bring back the original CIWG fees. Its been a huge blow for all of us and could very well end up costing our higher education at a reputed institute and have a detrimental affect on our future. Thank you sir for reading my concerns. Wishing you a pleasant day. Yours truly Siddharth Pandalai
